SRIRAMAJAYAM
Sri
Kothandaramar temple is located in
Pon Vilaintha Kalathur, which is 8 kms south of Chengleput. This temple is more than 700 years
old. It is said that Sri Thoopul Nigamantha Mahadesikan once passed through
this village on his way to Thiruvahindirapuram. The village is not only famous
for such divine acts, but also for promoting Tamil language. Padikkasu Pulavar, Andhaga kavi
[Blind] Veeraraghava Mudaliar and Pugazhendi pulavar, were all born in this
sacred place. The noted freedom fighter Salem Vijayaraghavachariar also belongs
to this village.
HISTORY OF THE TEMPLE :
It was a place
for three days halt for Sri Thoopul Nigamantha Mahadesikan on his way to
Thiruvahindirapuram. During
the stay in a groundnut merchant’s house due to some reasons he could not offer
anything to his personal deity Lord Sri Hayagreevar [The God of Wisdom and
Knowledge] and so he offered just pure water as nivedhanam. In the midnight the merchant was woken
up by some sound and when he came out he saw a beautiful white horse eating
groundnut from the bags kept by the merchant. Astonished to hear the narration from
the merchant in the morning, Sri Desikan confirmed the merchant that he had not
brought any horse with him. When Sri Desikan went out to see the places where
the horse was gazing and found golden beads scattered in those places.
Pleasingly that this was the act of Sri Hayagreeva and after explaining this to
the merchant he continued his journey. Because
of golden beads showered in the fields, this village has been designated as Pon
[Gold] Udhirndha [Scattered] Kalathur, which during the course of time has
become Pon Vilaintha Kalathur. This is the folk take passed through
hereditarily. As if to
confirm this a husk of the harvested gold were found two kilometers away from
this place is called Pon Padhar Kootam. This has been confirmed by Sri Parakala
Matam Jeeyar [who is continuing the worship of Sri Hayagreevar idol as Sri
Desikan possessed] and by Sri Krishna Premi Swamigal of Paranur.
